To move to Zoho Books in Nigeria, choose a cut-over date (ideally a month or year end), clean your customer, vendor and item lists, set up your chart of accounts, VAT at 7.5% and withholding tax, import contacts and items, enter opening balances and open invoices and bills, reconcile against your old trial balance, then train users and go live.
More Nigerian businesses are moving their accounting to Zoho Books in Nigeria, driven by the need for real-time numbers, cleaner VAT records and readiness for electronic invoicing. Moving accounts is not just an import job, though. Done badly, it leaves you with balances that do not match, duplicate customers and a finance team that loses confidence in the new system.
This guide walks through how to plan and complete the move from Excel, QuickBooks, Sage or another package, including the Nigerian tax settings to get right and a checklist for a clean go-live.
Why businesses are moving to Zoho Books in Nigeria
- Naira pricing. Zoho Books is priced per organisation in Naira, from a free plan for micro businesses to advanced editions with inventory and analytics. See Zoho pricing in Nigeria for current plans.
- VAT tracking and returns. Paid editions track VAT on sales and purchases and produce VAT summaries for filing.
- e-Invoicing readiness. Zoho lists e-invoicing among the features of its paid Zoho Books plans in Nigeria, an important consideration as electronic invoicing is rolled out.
- Connected business. Books connects natively with Zoho CRM, Inventory, Expense, Payroll and Analytics, so quotes become invoices and sales become reports automatically.
- Anywhere access. Directors and accountants see live numbers on the web and mobile without waiting for month-end spreadsheets.
Electronic invoicing and what it means for your accounts
The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) is rolling out mandatory electronic invoicing through its Merchant Buyer Solution (MBS), in phases based on annual turnover. Large taxpayers, with turnover of ₦5 billion or more, were required to adopt e-invoicing by 31 July 2026, and medium and emerging taxpayers are being brought on in later phases.
E-invoicing requires accurate customer tax details, consistent item and tax codes and invoices raised from a system rather than a word processor or spreadsheet. Moving to Zoho Books in Nigeria now puts that structure in place. Because requirements and connection methods are still evolving, speak to us about how e-invoicing applies to your business category before you go live.

Step-by-step: moving to Zoho Books
Choose your cut-over date
The cleanest switch is at the start of a financial year or month. You carry forward closing balances from the old system and record all new transactions in Zoho Books.
Clean your data before import
Remove duplicate customers and vendors, complete Tax Identification Numbers, standardise item names and close out stale records. Clean data is the single biggest factor in a smooth migration.
Set up the organisation and chart of accounts
Enter company details, base currency (NGN), financial year, branches or locations, and map your existing chart of accounts. Keep account codes consistent with your previous system to make reconciliation easier.
Configure Nigerian taxes
Set up VAT at 7.5%, VAT-exempt and zero-rated categories where relevant, and withholding tax rates for the payments you deduct or suffer WHT on. Agree the treatment with your accountant before transactions begin.
Import contacts and items
Import customers, vendors and products or services using Zoho Books import templates, including tax treatment and payment terms.
Enter opening balances and open items
Enter opening balances from your closing trial balance, then import unpaid customer invoices and supplier bills individually so you can track receivables and payables from day one.
Connect banks and payment methods
Add bank accounts, set opening bank balances, and set up bank statement imports or feeds and online payment options for customers.
Reconcile before you go live
Compare the Zoho Books trial balance, aged receivables and aged payables with your old system. Every total should match before you switch.
Train users and set controls
Set user roles and approval rules, lock past periods, and train the finance team on daily tasks: invoicing, bills, bank reconciliation and VAT reports.
Migrating from Excel, QuickBooks or Sage
| Moving from | What to bring across | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Excel | Customer and vendor lists, item list, closing balances, open invoices | Inconsistent names, missing TINs, formulas instead of values |
| QuickBooks | Chart of accounts, contacts, items, trial balance, open invoices and bills | Tax codes that do not match Nigerian VAT settings |
| Sage | Nominal ledger, customer and supplier ledgers, stock items, balances | Account code mapping and multi-branch structures |
For most businesses we recommend migrating balances and open items rather than every historical transaction. History stays available in the old system or as exported reports, and the new books start clean.
Go-live checklist
- Cut-over date agreed and communicated.
- Chart of accounts mapped and approved by your accountant.
- VAT and WHT configured and tested on sample transactions.
- Contacts and items imported with tax details.
- Opening balances entered; trial balance matches the old system.
- Open invoices and bills imported; aged reports match.
- Bank accounts connected and opening balances confirmed.
- Invoice templates branded with your logo, TIN and bank details.
- User roles, approvals and period locks set.
- Finance team trained; old system closed for new entries.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Importing dirty data and planning to "clean it later".
- Entering opening balances as one lump sum instead of open invoices and bills.
- Setting up taxes without your accountant's sign-off.
- Running the old and new systems in parallel for too long.
- Skipping reconciliation because the go-live date is close.
These are the same patterns behind many struggling systems, as we explain in why Zoho implementations fail.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Zoho Books suitable for Nigerian businesses?
Yes. Zoho Books in Nigeria is priced in Naira, supports NGN as the base currency, tracks VAT on sales and purchases, supports withholding tax setup and multi-currency transactions, and connects with Zoho CRM, Inventory and Payroll.
How long does it take to migrate to Zoho Books?
A small business with clean data can move in one to two weeks. Larger organisations with several branches, inventory or complex balances typically take three to six weeks including reconciliation and training.
Can I import my data from QuickBooks or Sage into Zoho Books?
Yes. Contacts, items, chart of accounts, opening balances and open invoices and bills can be imported from QuickBooks, Sage, Excel and most other systems using import templates, then reconciled against your old trial balance.
Does Zoho Books support e-invoicing in Nigeria?
Zoho lists e-invoicing among the features of its paid Zoho Books plans in Nigeria. Because NRS requirements and onboarding steps differ by taxpayer category, confirm how e-invoicing applies to your business with your partner and tax adviser.
Which Zoho Books plan should a Nigerian SME choose?
Most SMEs start with Standard for VAT and e-invoicing, or Professional if they need purchase orders, multi-currency or projects. Businesses that hold significant stock across warehouses usually choose Elite.
